I consider it quite an honor to be included on Phil's list of "125 blogs in his orbit" and to be in such great company with the other blogs and folks listed. Timothy Johnson enhanced the list in a post over at carpe factum and added comments for his favorites blogs. It reminded me to check out other blogs on Phil's list and I liked that his post continued the link love of Phil's. Awesome! In keeping with the spirit, I shall do the same to pass on some blogs that have to be great -- Phil The "Make It Great!" Guy recommended them! Some I've visited and some are new - I plan on checking each one out to see what I've been missing!

I rode dirt bikes in my youth and purchased my first Yamaha street bike at 18, about a week after graduating high school. I rode it, loved it and upgraded, then we moved from Orange County, California to Seattle and I heard nothing but "how bad" the rainy weather is in Seattle, so I ended up selling my Ninja the day before we drove up. After a few years of great summers and decent springs/falls here I bought another bike, this time a cruiser, and I l-o-v-e it!! Sure there are a few months it gets really wet and cold, but I'm fortunate to have alternative transportation so my bike hibernates most of the winter and I make the most of dry days - the warmer the better!
I'm a video game fiend - I can play for hours. I have 3 incarnations of Nintendo systems (Wii Rocks!) and the original Xbox, each with countless games. I put in an early request for an Xbox 360 to Santa/my girlfriend. I'm currently playing Metroid Prime 3 and looking forward to Halo3 (which requires an Xbox 360 hint hint)! FPS, racing, puzzle/strategy, action/adventure, etc. - I love to play until my brain's burned and eyes blurred :)

Hmm, who to tag or annoy next..
Eric Brown from Aligning technology, strategy, people and projects
Stacey Douglas from Undocumented Features
Bas de Baar from Project Shrink: The Blog
Lisa Haneberg from Management Craft
Todd Wallentine from todd.wallentine.com
<ahem> "Tag, you're it!" </ahem>
posted by Raven at Raven's Brain under Blogging
Tags: Blogging, Blog Meme, Meme, Raven Young, Raven's Brain

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-26T02:33:01Z</dcterms:modified>

Essential reading for bloggers - 55 articles for serious bloggers

lifehacker has a useful reference for those who own a blog in Essential reading for bloggers. It raises some interesting concerns and makes solid points regarding comments, their abuse, anonymous posters, etc. that might get you thinking differently about how you comment on blogs, or whether to allow comments on your own blog. Here's a gem of an excerpt:

"When a blog allows comments right below the writer's post, what you get is a bunch of interesting ideas, carefully constructed, followed by a long spew of noise, filth, and anonymous rubbish that nobody ... nobody ... would say out loud if they had to take ownership of their words. Look at this innocent post on a real estate blog. By comment #6 you're already seeing complete noise. By #13 you have someone cursing and saying "go kill yourself." On a real estate blog. #18 and #23 have launched into a middle eastern nuclear conflageration which continues for 100 posts. They're proving John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory every day. Pathetic. On a real estate blog. Lockhart Steele, is this what you want Curbed to look like? Really? It's not fun, freewheeling freedom of expression, yay first amendment!. It's mostly anonymous hate speech.

OK, that's an extreme example... or is it? I don't know how many times I've read a brilliant article someone wrote on a blog. By the end of the article, I'm excited, I'm impressed, it was a great article. And then you get the dribble of morbid, meaningless, thoughtless comments. If the article, for example, mentions anything in anyway related to Microsoft, you get some kind of open source nuclear war. If the article mentions web browsing in any way, there's always some person without an outbound filter who feels compelled to tell you about how he uses Opera, so he doesn't have this problem, although, frankly, I could care less what Anonymous uses. He's not even human to me, he's anonymous. What web browser he uses doesn't amount to a hill of beans. It's not a single bean. It's not even the memory of last week's huevos rancheros. It's just noise. Useless noise. Thoughtless drivel written by some anonymous non-entity who really didn't read the article very carefully and didn't come close to understanding it and who has no ability whatsoever to control his typing diarrhea if the site's software doesn't physically prevent him from posting. "

Read more here: http://joelonsoftware.com/items/2007/07/20.html

Thanks to Alexey of OneYoxel for pointing me to this great post. It certainly got me rethinking how and when I comment. I like to leave a little "great post, very useful info" type of comment when I read an interesting, well written post. Now I am wondering if this is just creating "noise" and not providing actual value to the topic and theme of the post. However, on my own blog, I LOVE to get any type of comment - especially positive ones! I don't care how brief they are - "nice" would make me smile and feel as if I contributed something to the blogoshpere. I'd imagine opinions vary on "to comment, or not to comment", with some bloggers preferring a linked comment from the author/commentors blog and others finding useful dialog and exchanges on their posts and forums. Ahh.. it's why I enjoy blogging and reading posts - you get sparked to think about things that have somehow become mundane. I still plan on leaving my comments open, but that is a somewhat misleading statement, since Windows Live Spaces requires an account to leave comments and most folks don't want to take the time to sign up just to leave a comment. Such is life. I keep hoping Spaces (a Microsoft effort) will catch up to every other blogging tool out there and add more features to make Spaces a real, viable blogging platform. But I digress.. Am I now adding noise to my own post? Uh-oh!

Of course the answer is "Uhm, nothing but.." and "but" is the reason you blog - Because I learn so much, I like to write, I like to share interesting information, I like the social and creative aspects, etc. Well, now you can have a snazzy updated answer to the question next time you're talking about your blog:

Raven: "I'm so jazzed, my blog is about to break 30,000 page views. I can't believe how much traffic has increased in the last few months!"

Dude: "Oh, your blog? What do you get at 30,000 hits?"

Raven: "Uhm, nothing but.. it's worth $7,339.02!"

Yeah! How's that for an answer? I found a cool little tool at Dane Carlson's blog that actually pulls data from Technorati and calculates a value for your blog. It even generates the HTML for you to paste a nice little badge on your blog. I'm not sure how accurate the values are but the page says "Inspired by Tristan Louis's research into the value of each link to Weblogs Inc, I've created this little applet using Technorati's API which computes and displays your blog's worth using the same link to dollar ratio as the AOL-Weblogs Inc deal." I just thought it was a fun little widget for bloggers!

How much is your blog worth?
http://www.business-opportunities.biz/projects/how-much-is-your-blog-worth/

Back on October 11th I did a little post: Raven's Brain Milestone: My Blog Tops 10,000 Page Views. I was excited that this blog (Raven's Brain) reached 10K page views in under a year. Since then, in under 4 months, I've managed to rack up another 10K views and am currently sitting at 21,393. My family occasionally reads my blog, and my dad even has one, but I had to chuckle when my mom asked "What do you get when you reach 20,000?". It's an honest question and I guess the best answer would be "personal satisfaction", since the only award I'd get is one I printed out myself! Focus on the reward and not the award, I always say - actually, I just made that up. Or maybe I remembered it from somewhere cause it sounds too clever.. </end tangent> As I mentioned in my other post, I know page views isn't the most accurate metric to gauge site traffic, but it's the only real stat I get and so I celebrate. Here's a stat comparison:

January 31st, 2007 Spaces Stats

Total page views: 21693

Page views this week: 840
October 11th, 2006 Spaces Stats

Total page views: 10084

Page views this week: 216

Another little piece of blog excitement has been watching my blog move from a ranking around 1.5 million at Technorati to my current ranking of 560, 134. Technorati's site says "There's 55 million blogs, some of them have to be good. - Matt". Taking that into consideration, I don't think my ranking's too bad. Yeah, I know the 55 Million blogs is a rough number, some are ghosts, some are abandoned, duplicates, rarely used, infrequently updated, etc. But let's not talk about that.. I've also been watching subscribers to my feed at Feedsburner slowly grow. Of course none of these numbers will get me a toaster oven, panini grill or the coveted coffeemaker. They are of use to me though. I know when people visit my blog and read my posts and I can track what posts and searches are popular to better understand what site visitors are interested in. Most importantly, it tells me that I'm doing something right. Traffic has doubled in under four months and I've received a lot of great emails from folks from all over, commenting on various posts and topics. Originally this blog was going to serve as a repository for articles, posts, reading lists, photos, podcasts, videos, etc. that I wanted to keep track of. Now I'm finding that I enjoy reading other peoples posts on a variety of subjects, I enjoy posting on interesting topics/opinions/articles/whitepapers/etc., and other's are interested in the posts, information and resources I share here. It's been fun and I'm not going anywhere - Stay tuned!

Spike

I know there are a ton more that I've read but these are just the ones I saved after I got tagged by Blaine Collins of The Stronger Teams Blog. Here's my list (scary!):

Sometimes when I call in phone orders the person on the other end hears my name as Raisin. I don't know why this irks me. And don't even get me started on the whole "That's so Raven" train..

One of the first concerts I can remember attending is Siouxsie and the Banshees at Universal Ampitheater. A lot of other bands I saw will reveal my past metal head & punk(ish) side: Anthrax, Metallica (Pre sell-out), Suicidal Tendencies, Skid Row, Ozzy, Infectious Grooves (and so many more), but I've also seen bands and performers like: Sinead O'connor, Buddy Guy, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac, Tesla, Bon Jovi, Duran Duran. Please don't hold this against me ;)

I often camped with my father as a young girl - as young as I can recall and up until 16ish. When my mom was well we would camp in our motorhome or travel light and stay in hotels for comfort, but often it was just my dad and I. We stayed in tee pees, lean-to's and various modern and primitive tents. We rarely used camp stoves and lanterns (gas) and tended to really rough it with campfire cooking, no plumbing or facilities and candle/campfire lighting. Somewhere along the line I lost the urge to live among the elements and I've taken my mom's preference to 3+ star hotels, hot food and indoor plumbing!

I went to school with "I think we're alone now" Tiffany and somewhere around here is a personally autographed 45 record to prove it..

I played drums in a few bands down in LA and OC in the mid 90's. My brief bit of fame (note sarcasm) occured when I played a girl band night at the Whisky A Go Go - a famous LA nightclub that showcased many, many awesome bands from the 60's to 90's (The Doors, Hendrix, The Kinks, The Who, Zeppelin, Ramones, Blondie, G&R and so many more). I've been there many times and I even saw a few big names perform including, I'm somewhat embarassed to admit, Ratt during their Lovin' You's A Dirty Job tour in 1990. Being on stage drumming (for a 30 minute set) on such a famous stage was quite a rush and I don't care that it was a Thursday night with most of the crowd FOTBs (friends of the band). How many chicks can say they drummed with "Weird Al" Yankovic in the crowd, eh? Ok, so it was only because his regular drummer was playing in my friends band, who were performing directly after us, but I still saw his bobbing hair and hawaiian shirt!

Thanks to Blaine for the tag! You can check out his list of 5 and here are the folks I'm passing the tagged torch off to:

When I started this project last year I had no idea where to start, what to write, or what tool to use. I didn't know whether people would visit or read or care or if blogging would be a waste of my time. I can say that since my first post on November 1st, 2005 I have learned so much and have found a way to make blogging and reading blogs useful to me both personally and professionally. I've also become mildly addicted to blogging, especially reading PM focused and business/management blogs.

I decided to use MSN Spaces, now Windows Live Spaces, for my blogging tool since I already had a passport account and setting up and maintaining the space was a snap. Looking back, I wish I had gone with a more robust blogging tool like wordpress, but Spaces is still serving the purpose well enough. I get some decent traffic and have been watching the numbers increase each week. I use my space to share interesting articles, posts, whitepapers and other resources I come across as well as to house links and information I might want to refer to later. It's part PM/Business/Management/Leadership repository and part hodge podge, just like my brain.

I subscribe to 254 news feeds and blogs via Bloglines, a combination of subjects like business, leadership, communication, project management, software design and programming, general management, creativity and innovation and more. I don't read each new item everyday and I don't spend hours and hours huddled in a dark cave blogging. Bloglines is an online service for searching, subscribing to and creating news feeds, blogs and rich web content. I visit each day and skim through a few topics and I might highlight one or two in a post of my own. Instead of reading dozens of magazines or searching multiple blogs each week, I can go to my bloglines account and it tracks what's new, saved, unread, and subscribing to new Blogs or feeds is a snap. I have read more PM and business content in the past year because it's so easy! I love having so much great content, written and provided by a variety of sources, available for my reading, mental processing and potential blogging. I have learned so much in the last year that all I really know is I don't know enough!

One last toot of my blog's horn:

Current stats read:

Total page views: 10084

Page views today: 101

Page views this week: 216

Page views within the last hour: 11

I'm just happy my three regular readers find the information I post mildly useful. Thanks to everyone who visited this past year (myself included, I'm sure) to reach 10k page views in under a year. Yeah, I know page views are not the most reliable traffic stat, but it's the only statistic provided and so I celebrate. "Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance." - Dieter Sprockets Host (Mike Myers).

It was interesting to me because I fretted quite a bit before finally deciding to blog. I've read so many stories recently about various people losing their jobs because of content posted on their personal blog sites. There's this one from CNN Money: Have a blog, lose your job?. It mentions the guy who got his "dream job" at google and was fired within a month for talking about his thoughts on the company, and also the Delta flight attendant (also mentioned in the PI article above) fired for posting photos in her Delta uniform and blogging about her travels. There are tons more out there - too many too read, I'm sure, but they do make you think quite hard about what you should post on your blog site - this includes your words, photos, likes, dislikes and anything else you choose to mention. I want to talk about my pm experience and discuss challenges and such with others but there are a lot of things to consider when posting. As a professional, you need to use superior judgement when posting to make sure you don't reveal proprietary info, certain business or project details or anything else that might reflect poorly on your company and you as a manager or individual. I found this link in the UK How to blog and not lose your job that has some really good info on the subject. Good guidelines and makes you think a little deeper on blogging and potential pitfalls. Definitely food for thought if you're considering blogging..
